I have a bk 4 years old as well. For three years I did not apply for anything. I started out with a secure BOA visa which help to open many other doors. Mind you, that the cards that I now have range from $1,000 to $100 (cld with gemb). I pay my cards in full every month and rotate them every two months. I now have 15 credit cards all open in 2008 (I was trying to keep this a secret) even the BOA secure. I honestly believe the BOA card helped me to get others cards. I got the BOA in May of 2008 and 5 GEMB cards in August and so on and so forth.
I now know I should not have been so greedy with application sprees and just set back and waited to the economy gets better. In other words, it is possible to get cards (not tier ones eight off the bat) just not so many at one time.

Since yours are just a couple of years old, I say pay them off. Your right, once you pay them off they will show "paid" but if in the next 3 - 5 years you plan on making a major purchase, i.e., home, auto, they (collection accounts) will come back to haunt you.
I had a couple of collection accounts that I paid off that made them look current on my credit report but when I started to shop for a car and speak to different lending institutions, they told me I would be "dead in the water" had I not been proactive in paying off those accounts.
Listen to everyone here and do your research to make the best decision for yourself................

WOW really, they sound kinda cheap on CLI. Well I got the card today with a $300 Credit Line. When I called to activate the card, the lady was trying to get me sign up for the protection plan. It's kinda annoying because they keep saying the program protect you upto $10,000 and im like my credit like is low $300, so i dont really need it.
So im waiting 6 months later to ugprade for the Discover Card. Did anyone get to upgrade it? Please share your experience, Thanks alot..
I believe you can upgrade it, but GEMB is weird about "upgrades." What it will do on your bureau is show your store card as closed due to transfer and the Discover will be a brand new trade with the new opening date.

I would like to apply for the kays card, but looking at the application statuses of the people that have been approved, i would most likely be denied for it. it is not that i need a card for a jeweler, i just wanted one more open account.
You don't need it. They might have a security issue just like CJ (Crown Jewelers).

Ok......popquiz.As I said in a previous post I did have a Discover card back in the mid to late 90's.There was a balance owed,it got old & fell off my report or I may have included it in my Bankruptcy a few years ago.
This is my question. If I reapply & am not approved can they try & charge me for the old amount from way back when? Im trying to get my credit back on track & thought about another Discover card.
Thanks
ohwoody
I am very sure that they still have record of your account regardless if the trade has been deleted from your bureaus. Discover is very conservative even before this economic mess. They will likely decline you and maybe offer you that HSBC Direct Rewards Discover-an offer that really should be passed up. As for trying to charge you, Discover may state that you have a greater chance of approval for a new account if you pay the previous balance, but they cannot legally make you pay it (approved or declined).

This is the best way, and it is free. Hooter's will credit your account from the day you made the payment, no matter how long it took for it to post. I have never had a problem with them at all through electronic payments, so follow hjm advice on this one.I would use make the payments electronically and see how it works out.
