Most consumers tend to forget that history on the account is far more valuable than the credit limit.

The Capital One credit steps program is working. I called earlier this month and they doubled my credit limit to $600.00. I went on line yesterday and noticed an additional increase to $750.00 I've had the card since late October.

Best Buy card - received card in November with $300 CL - increased to $500.00 - no phone call.

Cap One is my favorite card these days (they are just the best and most understanding company).

I am completely shocked that Besy Buy showed you love (I have heard how cheap HSBC is with other members on this site). But, I will give them to my 1 yr mark and if they don't do something their gone.

I just checked today and my JCPenney card gave me an auto $250 CLI. My limit was $1000 and now it is $1250. I also hit the luv button on my Walmart card and got a $75 CLI which makes my limit now $275, not much but in this economy I'll take it! I have a $300 limit on my Sam's club card and I cannot get them to budge. I have had the card since June 08 with no CLI. I have had 2 on my Walmart and now 2 on JCP. Same lender, but not same CLI policy I guess. I only use it to get gas and PIF every month. Oh well, I guess it will happen eventually!

I am offically jealous AmyB. I have had my JCPenney since April and I have only recieved 1 CLI (from 100 to 250) and every 2-3 months I've been hitting their love button online and have been getting continuous denials from them. I am seriouly over them, and whatever I charge on the card, they don't get a dime of interest off me.

Tribute - soon to go in the sock drawer - had the card since August 2007 current limit has been at 750 for awhile. Tried to call today and got the recorded message stating they do not accept requests for CLI.

Credit One Bank - cheaaaappppp - pay off the bill every month - had since 3/2007 200.00 - at 400 currently. Paying off bill and it will join the Tribute card in the draw as well.

Target - whats up with them in terms of CLI? Still at 200 since October - do use much - had no bill last month - since I PIF.

I also agree, because this month I was hit with several late fees, not because I didn't have it to pay, but I simply forgot about certain bills with classes starting and all. I am in the process of consolidating too HJM331. Keeping up with over 10 different payment due dates is too hectic (including my household bills)

Thats exactly what I am trying to do too! Just killed HSBC. Next month I think I am going to kill Target. Then I have a store card for The Buckle which is going to get closed too! I just didn't want to do them all at once because it will bring my score down a bunch all at once.

hmj331,

I agree that simple is better. Life is already complicated w/o a bunch of due dates to remember. We gotta do what we can to make it easy on ourselves - save our energy for the truly hard stuff.

Mary, thanks for sharing your experiences with us. I have been consolidating my cards and I only have one card that I carry a balance on and use for all my purchases which prevents me from being late on my credit cards. I like to keep it simple so I only have one payment to make every month.

Yes, it's a Target Visa. Highest APR out of all my cards so I never let a balance run on that card, but nice to have for emergencies.

When I said good payment history, I didn't mean perfect payment history with Cap 1. They are nice because they've never punished me with default rates (but of course I got hit with late/overlimit fees) for mistakenly going over limit or paying a day or two late, but that's probably why they aren't so quick to increase my limit.

I'd been a little forgetful on payment dates once in a while in the past until I set up recurring online bill-payments with my credit union - and that has really helped me prevent those oversights with all my bills.

I applied for Target July 2007 and they gave me $4000 limit, my score was about 690. Then they raised my limit to $5000 after a year w/o me asking.

Kind of surprised at Target's "generousity" as I've had them the shortest and they are my highest limit card.

(I've been with Cap 1 since 2004 with good payment history and its limit is $2500 for personal and $1800 for business cards, and had to ask for limit increases.)

That is a Target Visa right? I had issues with Capital One at first too Mary. These guys now who recently opened a Cap1 got the credit steps program where they get nice increases. But, keep loyal to them, they really do take care of you. I've had mine for 11 years now, my first credit card.
