Well my credit score was in the 660-670 range when I got mine and they started me with a low $300 limit. I've had the card a year without any increases and the one I did ask for was declined and I waited six months after the account was opened before asking. Granted I don't use this card often and when I do its usually for household cleaning items, but still. If they increase my limit, I will use the card more. What else can I do with that toy limit at Lowes, lol. It wasn't this way when Monogram bank owned the card, but I think they got themselves into some trouble and had dismantle.

Nope. I've had my Lowe's card for about 8 months and the only CLI I've received was for $50 and that was 5 or 6 months ago. My current CL is $550.
$50 (although low, is still better than nothing). GEMB doesn't seem to be so nice with the CLI increases these days.
Just wondering, was it relatively easy to get the Lowe's card? I have to do some fix-ups to my apt and I wouldn't mind getting their card.

See that's the kinda stuff I'm talking about when it comes to GEMB, I'm grateful that they extended credit to me, but these toy credit lines for an home improvement store, are just downright ridiculous and a $50 increase, come on. Did you request it, or was it automatic, hjm331. I'm scared to ask for one. I've had this card for one year counting this month and gotten nothing.

Orchard bank gold card with a credit limit of $300. After 6 months they issue a $20 increase. So my my credit limit is $320. Now (four months later) as I was logging on to make a payment I see the credit limit is $720. I am still having trouble believing it. Maybe HSBC made a mistake.
I think you are the fourth person or so to be given a CLI recently from HSBC. Strange, some companies are declining but HSBC has been giving CLI's. It's like Bizzaro World, usually HSBC is so tight that they should consider making diamonds from coal instead of issuing credit.
Congratulations and take it and run with it.

It all depends on what type of card it is and where you're at with your credit. If it's an Orchard Bank card with a $500 limit but with a perfect payment history for 3-4 years, I wouldn't close it until I got approved for a couple of prime cards from BOA, Citi, Chase, etc. I don't think I would close it all because the limit would only matter if your report is being reviewed manually.
When you apply for an auto loan, they base their decision on your FICO scores and the higher your FICO scores are, you have a better chance of getting approved and receiving a low interest rate. I don't like closing accounts that have a good payment history for a decent amount of time because that's proof that you are a responsible borrower when it comes to credit.

No no no no no, you are not wrong! This is why it is best to get rid of low limit cards who do not want to offer you higher cl's. What hjm is trying to say is that we try to tell people that history plays a huge factor on your credit report, but it is not the only factor that creditors are looking for. I am pretty sure that you have seen this on many postings when we try to bring up-spirits and hopes to those who were denied based on (so they assume) scores only.
Creditors looks at many of other factors on your report when they base their decision for approval/denial, but what they do look at is how long you had the card and the history of payments without charge offs, lates, over-limits....etc. I think that is what he was trying to say. HJM please correct me if I am wrong!

Most consumers tend to forget that history on the account is far more valuable than the credit limit.
Very true, but doesn't it hurt your score to have low limit cards on it? When you have a new creditor review your report and your highest limit card is 600 won't they think twice about the limit they give you? They may think, "yea, he/shes payment history is great, but why aren't there current creditors giving them a real credit limit? Are they not responsible enough to handle a high limit?" I am not trying to be difficult, I am really just asking questions here. Maybe I am wrong and it doesn't matter. But, I have cards that have a much longer history than 1 year on them, so I am not to worried if I have to close them. I just feel strongly about certain companies that take your money (either by monthly interest charges and annual fees) and don't want to reward you for being a loyal customer to them.
Just a thought...
