You know Colo I did not think of age both of Orchards were well over a year old one almost three years and the other about a year and half.
Yeah. Like HJM pointed out though, even though they are all HSBC accounts, each has its own "division" of sorts. So it did work for your Orchard cards because they were both Orchard. They are strange indeed. If you have not already, try for a Capital One card, they are a great bank and will grow with you.

HSBC is the parent bank and HSBC Retail Services is a division of HSBC. That's probably why.
It is still crazy to me that the MasterCard is actually the worse of the two offered. Usually the branded card (Visa/MasterCard etc) is the higher grade card. I can't stand HSBC-and the funny thing is, I've never even done business with them.

I've never heard that happen before.
Yeah, they are probably on different platforms can cannot be "downgraded."

Maybe just give it another year and see if they will convert your new MasterCard to a store card. I don't know if that is possible though.

Best Buy MC - I have an account that I got in June 08 with a CL of $450, it was increased to $550 in January. I applied for the regular BB card and they gave me another MC with a $500 limit. I called to combine the 2 accounts to get 1 $1050 CL and they had me fill out a paper to update my info and I had to send it back. I called to check on the status and the woman said that the consolidation was denied. She said I would get a letter in the mail. Has anyone had this happen when trying to combine 2 Best Buy MC accounts? The supervisor did not know why it was not combined either. I really don't want 2 of the same account, but I do not want to cancel it either since I took the hit for the inquiry. Let me know if anyone has ever had this happen. HSBC is weird at times!
I am surprised they even issued two MasterCards. I don't hide the fact that I can't stand HSBC. Maybe just give it another year and see if they will convert your new MasterCard to a store card. I don't know if that is possible though.

Was it an auto-cli in January? Sounds like they didn't want to give you the store card, so they could charge you another annual fee. I dont think it's that strange at all that they didn't combine them, they probably see it as "we can charge her 2 $79 AF's a year."

In this case, both cards are the same so I don't see why they wouldn't combine them.
That's why both cards are now closed.
