When Money Runs Out as a College Student

When Money Runs Out as a College Student

Let’s face it: most college students are on a budget. There is only so much money to go around, but there are many expenses in play. From nights on the town to sporting events to gasoline, there is always something popping up.

Just the same as those in the working world, a budget can go a long way in helping any college student stay on track. You don’t have to go to extremes. All you have to do is get a basic idea of how much money you have, how long it needs to last, and which expenses are essential.

If you find your funds running low, if you find that your money isn’t going to last much longer, here are three things to do:

1. Get more serious about your budget. You may find that you can stretch your money a longer period of time if you take the right approach. It may not be fun, but it is the right thing to do.

2. Consider getting a job. This doesn’t mean you have to work 40 hours per week. Even if you pick up a part-time job, it may be more than enough to supply you with the cash necessary to get by for the meantime.

3. Don’t deviate from the plan. For example, if you have the ability to eat at the dining hall for free, take advantage of this as often as possible. Why dine out when you don’t have to?

Most college students face financial trouble at some point in time. Some continue to struggle, others turn to their parents, and some realize that the tips above can keep them above water.

Do you have any other advice for college students in this position?

If you never face financial trouble in college, consider yourself very lucky. In fact, it may not necessarily be a bad thing to face some financial difficulties during that time in your life because it will be a great life lesson for you. It is also usually much easier to tackle those kinds of problems during college as compared to “adulthood”. It can become very stressful when you are having financial troubles when you have to provide for others. I would recommend to use Chris’s advice and always learn from your mistakes.
