CG101 wrote "(more than enough to cover any calamity) " and it got me to thinking, "How much is enough ?"
When do you say, enough is enough ? Is enough when you can cover any maintenance on your home, i.e. Roof needs repair, plumbing, foundation issues, Furnace, Hot Water Heater, etc. ?
How about Auto issues, i.e. Transmission, Electrical, Engine ?
Medical Bills ? Education ?
Will leave out being unemployed, won't go there...........
Also I don't know if any of you caught Oprah's show yesterday (05/27) but Suze Orman was on and she gave a challenge to the audience]
[*]Don't spend any money for one day
[*]Don't use your credit card for one week
[*]Don't go out to a restaurant for one month
[/LIST]Think about these three things. Do you realize how much money you could save in those 30 days ? Now for you working people you might think well if I don't eat out for lunch that means my Grocery bill will go up because I will have to pack, right ? The extra money you put in your grocery bill will be far less than the amount of money needed to eat out everyday for lunch !
SMCC, believe it or not we are on the same page! First of all, I want to answer your question about calamities and "how much is enough".
First of all, I believe in having ACCESS to funds (be it a loan like a credit card or emergency savings) when there is a real emergency. Right now, if I get a call about either of my parents, for example, who are in their 70s, I can hop on a plane immediately to get to where I got to get to and rent whatever vehicle to get to them. If I have spend more than I revolve for that, so be it, but at least I know in case I need to for a REAL emergency, I can with no questions asked. Now you ask how much is too much? Well, I make a bit over $3k a month (net). I believe that one month's salary (at minimum) is more than enough for me (not like I can put rent or mortgage on the CC...LMAO).
Now barring an emergency, I have to have priorities in what I spend my money on. Do I want a 55"+ LCD TV in my bedroom? YES! GOOD LAWDY, I'S DO!! Will I buy one? No! Why, you might ask, since I obviously have enough credit to do so? Because as I said early on, I will not make a major purchase like that UNLESS and UNTIL I can afford to pay for it in cash WITHIN THE 20-25 DAY WINDOW (though in my case, every other check).
You have to realize too...I went for SEVERAL years without a credit card. (Because when I first got one, I ----ed it up by buying stuff I couldn't afford and not pay for it). So it is extremely easy for me to not fall into the trap. It works for me too because if I were to lose my gubment job (I work fo' state gubment...so it's unlikely that's happening, but still) whatever CC debt I have can be paid off immediately. Only thing I got to worry about is my car payment, but that's a different story.
Hope that answered some of what you asked.

That is the strategy we are using in my house and I did not even see the show:laugh:. We are putting cigarettes half way out, husband was restricted from his buddies and drinking for one week due to the CC he got and we had to pay it off, and utilities rising. he agreed to weekends only (although I smelled beer on him yesterday, while he begged to do laundry in the garage...go figure) and our ends has been noticeable after paying bills. I don't believe in extra money while in debt, I leave it there and pay more on another bill.
Don't spend any money for one day
Don't use your credit card for one week
Don't go out to a restaurant for one month
Thanks for bringing this up Buddie, I think it is important!

Don't trip off of cap1, although they had put me down, I still give them credit for picking me up. When they picked me up, I had a ton of baddies on my report but I had to wait over 30 days for an approval. Now it seems like they are rejecting those with scores in the 500's and low 600's, or with major baddies altogether. I guess I just made it.

Yeah, you are implementing the correct strategy. I don't blame you. You have nice cards, especially the World Points. I, to thid date, can't get over cap 1 and Travelocity. They went to the left on me. Orchard never did me that bad, they just stopped giving me cli's. Right about now, I am glad they didn't. CJ helped a lot of people out, including my husband, but they closed his account because he was not charging anything with them (also my sister). I was glad they closed his account because Ash told a scary story about them in this link https://www.financeglobe.com/SocialNet/forum/showthread.php?t=494
Yes, I have heard of those issues during my rebuilding days on boards like CB, et al.; I have found that credit cards are much more secure than paypal. I have had an issue of ID Theft once (two years ago, Easter Sunday) when some kids in Ohio tried to take over $600 from my bank account. I was so worried because I had written checks out to the light and gas company. Thankfully, though I had to sweat for 10 days, charges were reversed. However, I rarely use my bank's debit card anymore (I did link it to what it was....as I was part of the Certegy class action). The Visa/Mastercard offers very good protection and you don't jump through as much hoops as you would with a bank.
You know, the funniest thing, Crap One always denied me. Always! I can't seem to get a card with them, and perhaps it's for the best.
Do you know how much your husband's/sister's score went down when CJ dropped them? Just curious.

Can't argue with you about that one. Close it is! I will be following you with a few more cards pretty soon. I don't care if my scores do "Drop it likes its' hot" We can all drop together, as long as it does not drop from baddies.
Well initially, I didn't care about the AF. I had previously the HSBC rebuilder $500 and a Rewards 660 card. The Rewards 660 I had no choice but to drop. Those morons did not like the fact that I was prepaying my balance more than twice. Then I had to fax them a copy of the debit card used. I told them they can kiss my --- and told them to expect me to close this account when the balance gets piz-zaid. The HSBC card got dropped at my anniversary because I didn't want to pay the AF. At this point I will be down to 2 cards. The $300 Itunes will get combined with my $800 B&N, will keep my BOA Worldpoints and Hooters will be gone. So I'll have 5100, in total available credit (more than enough to cover any calamity) Plus $2200 in Macys, $2200 Bloomies, $300 Exxon, $200 Target $3k in the Sterlings stores (Jareds, Kays and Kays again as JB Robinson closed down). I believe that's it (oh and the CJ $2500...I had to buy crap or else they were gonna close me....I think I'm gonna keep CJ for another year....but I need their history right now).
