Tips to Avoid Overspending this Holiday Season

Tips to Avoid Overspending this Holiday Season

With the holiday season closing in, it’s safe to assume that you have a lot on your plate. For many, shopping for gifts is at the top of their priority list.

While this can be one of the biggest joys of the holiday season, it can soon turn to pain if you don’t take the right approach. In other words, you must have a plan in place that allows you to avoid overspending.

Here are three simple tips that can put you on the right track:

1. Don’t Use Credit Cards

This is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when shopping for holiday gifts. You should only use a credit card if you’re 100 percent sure you can afford to pay the balance in full when it comes due.

With a consumer credit card, it’s easy to buy more than you can afford. As a result, when the holiday season is over, you’re stuck with a bill that you are unable to pay.

2. Create a Budget

Before you do anything, set a budget that you’re comfortable following. Taking this one step further, be realistic with your numbers.

There’s nothing wrong with spending money on nice gifts, but you don’t want to spend more than you can afford. This is where a budget will keep you on track.

3. Shop Around

There used to be a time when shopping at local stores was your only option. Now, this is no longer the case. You can also use the internet to your advantage, allowing you to find and buy the right gifts at the lowest possible price.

Adding to this, don’t shy away from getting a jump on your shopping. The sooner you begin the more time you have to not only find the right gifts, but to save money on every purchase.

If you follow these three tips, you can avoid overspending this holiday season.

I set a spending limit per person so I know I won't overspend. Even if you overspend on 1-2 people, overall you will be close to your overall budget. I also try and come up with more creative (and less expensive gifts).
