How to Get Out of a Cell Phone Contract: Points of Consideration

Do you remember the days when every cell phone carrier was clamoring for your business? From a free phone to a variety of monthly perks, they were willing to do whatever it took to make you happy.

However, as cell phones became more popular, this all fell by the wayside. Soon enough, carriers were locking customers into long-term contracts.

If you’re interested in getting out of a cell phone contract, here are a few things to keep in mind:

•    First review your contract: Don’t do anything until you review your contract to better understand what the cancellation process entails. This will give you a good idea of what the carrier is going to say when you contact them.
•    Consider the early termination fee: This should be outlined in your contract, so pay close attention to it. Most of the time, the early termination fee is prorated base on how many months are remaining on your contract. So, for example, it’s cheaper to cancel with one month left than 10.
•    Have a reason: With a good enough reason and a bit of convincing, you may be able to escape your contract without paying a fee. If you lost your job and need to cut back on expenses, don’t hesitate to share this with your carrier. If you’ve had a serious problem with your service in the past, such as not getting reception when you travel, let them know about it.

You can easily get out of a cell phone contract if you’re willing to pay an early termination fee. Since this is something you’d rather avoid, turn your attention to the three points of consideration above.
