He tracked the owner down through their driver's license and made arrangements to meet him and return it. The guy said that was all of his spending money for his vacation, so he was thrilled to get it back with everything in it.
Did your father get a reward? If someone found $1,000 that I lost and actually returned it to me, I would have no issue with giving them $100 for their time, effort and honesty. None whatsoever.

The store kept it! Although, the nicer policy would have been to wait a certain amount of time and if no one claimed it, give it to the employee who found it.

A couple hours later a man called me and said I found your wallet on the highway I think my heart fell out of my body at that point . But he was nice enough to bring it to my house . Thank God for nice people like him!
Almost exactly the same thing happened to me about ten years ago. I left my purse in a Walmart shopping cart because I was so focused on getting my son in his car seat. I got home and called Walmart and, sure enough, some incredibly kind soul had turned it in to customer service. The thing that really blew me away was that it happened at Christmastime and all of my Christmas money was in my wallet. They could have gotten away with about $700, but they didn't.
