Anyone recently had their debit or credit card stolen over the holidays? I just checked by accounts and my Paypal account was hacked!

Very interesting, thanks for the additional detail Wanderer. In an ideal world, it would be great to break out the debit vs. credit (physical cards) vs. virtual/phone based payments.

Yes, that is the challenge. At this point I have not been able to secure neutral data on comparisons for usage between Debit Cards and Credit Cards for 2018. There have been lender views but not neutral information. Also, interested in what changes in consumer spending patterns may have occurred. One thing that has come to the fore front is the use of other payment methods through tools such as the Smart Phone and now JP Morgan Chase is issuing "Non-Contact" Debit and Credit Cards (they used to have a similar product called Blink Pay that worked as an RFID) back in the 2013 to 2016 era. Will add that the more neutral data that has come to the surface is for the 2016 and in some cases 2017 years which is not necessarily reflective of the happenin's of today.

Looking at the chart again, I am very surprised 30% of payments online are with a debit card. That seems very high to me.

100% agreed, but I know there is still a group of people who use the debit card regularly

What method of payment is the most popular?
In a 2017 survey, payment processor TSYS asked over 1,000 consumers which payment form they prefer. Forty-four percent chose debit cards, while 33 percent selected credit cards, and only 12 percent specified a preference for using cash. Consumers’ preference for credit cards decreased by 7 percent over the same survey's results from 2016, while the results for debit cards rose by 9 percent.
Since the benefits are quite different between credit and debit ... the risk is too high for me. No Debit Card use except for cash at a safe ATM.
