How to Save Money on the Cost of Prescription Medication

How much money do you spend every month on prescription medication? Is this beginning to take a toll on your budget?

If you find yourself in this position, there should be one thing on your mind: implementing a strategy that allows you to save money.

While it may sound impossible, there are several ways to save on this expense. Consider the following:

1. Opt for a Generic

Have you spoke with your doctor about switching from the brand name version of a drug to the generic? This doesn’t always work, but it’s one of the first ideas you should consider.

As long as the generic provides the same result, there’s a good chance your doctor will agree to the change.

2. Shop Online

Many online and mail order pharmacies have lower prices than what you would find at a local pharmacy. This may be a big change from what you’re used to, but in the end you’ll be glad to find that you can save money. Note: See comments/warnings about online pharmacies in a previous post.

3. Find a Pharmacy with a Free Medication Program

Did you know that many local pharmacies have a free medication program? Once you find one with this program, ask for a list of drugs that qualify. If you’re lucky, one or more of those that you currently take will be on the list.

Conclusion

Depending on your health, it’s possible that you’re spending hundreds of dollars each month on prescription medication. Rather than continue down this path, it’s time to make a change.

Consider one or more of the strategies above, as this could lead you to save more money than you ever thought possible.
